How to Protect Your Commercial Property This Holiday Season

How to Protect Your Commercial Property This Holiday Season

You need to do everything you can to protect your commercial property. Particularly around the holidays, it seems as though more accidents are likely to happen. This means you have to plan ahead and make responsible decisions at every turn.

Lock Everything Up

People can turn desperate around the holidays. They are more likely to steal than at any other time. You need to lock up your inventory every night and set an alarm if you have one. Even if it means staying on site a little longer, it can reduce the likelihood of any inventory walking off.

Don't assume employees won't steal when given an opportunity, either. Keep your safe locked and don't start training any new supervisors where you would have to divulge the safe combo or give out a set of keys until after the first of the year.

Practice Fire Safety

You might decide to decorate for the holidays. This is great, but you also have to practice fire safety. Be sure trees are watered and you don't plug too many cords into an extension cord or electrical outlet.

It's also a good idea to get a fire inspection so you can be sure you have enough fire extinguishers and all are working. If staff has not received fire extinguisher training, you may want to schedule this as well. After all, if people don’t know how to respond to a fire if one breaks out, it could all be lost before the firefighters get to the scene.

Train Employees

There may be a lot of new employees because of getting ready for the holiday rush. Everything is going a mile a minute and the last thing you have time for is to provide safety training to all of the new people who are only going to be here through the holidays. You have to make time. Otherwise, you could end up with people getting hurt, causing damage to your property, or various other problems. It takes times to train, but it could prevent having to file an insurance claim for one thing or another.

Have a Good Insurance Policy

Now is a great time to review your commercial property insurance in Florida. If you don't have enough coverage for your property value or inventory, it can be problematic. That's because you could file a claim with the insurance company and only a partial amount of damage/loss would be covered.

The goal is to go enough to protect your property so you don't have to file a claim. The holidays are all the more reason to pay attention to what's going on. Be conscious of what's going on. Call an insurance agent and discuss your policy, too. You can find out if there are more opportunities to protect your business property.
